Article [1] Why Has Bodhi-Dharma Left for the East? is one of those rare films that seems aimed at bringing about a spiritual transformation in the spectator. (1) Written, directed, photographed, and edited by Bae Yong-kyun, a South Korean art teacher, the film takes place mainly at a Zen Buddhist hermitage on top of a mountain near a modern Korean city. (2) The central interest of the film is not Zen itself, however. According to Bae, he chose this setting simply because he found it perfectly suited to express his search for life's meaning. (3)
